How it all started...

Like most iconic products, LoveSmiles was born from a deeply personal experience. During a dark time in my life in 2015, I was diagnosed with endometriosis. I required extensive surgery and so much ongoing treatment that I had to give up my much-loved career as a teacher.

In addition to the debilitation and pain caused by this disease, one of the side effects of my medication was the yellowing of my teeth, which added to the depression that inevitably accompanies a chronic illness.

The yellow teeth caused me to hate my smile and lose my self-esteem. My discolored teeth came to represent everything my condition had taken from me; after all, your smile is the first thing people notice about you.

Regular cleaning by dentists provided an effective short-term solution. Although there were many teeth whitening products on the market, try as I might, I could not find a chemical-free teeth whitening product that could be used while taking my medications.

After a two-year search failed to find a suitable product I could use at home, I began a quest to find an alternative. During my research, I found the safest way to naturally whiten teeth is with charcoal products; however, the type of charcoal most commonly used in teeth whitening products is highly abrasive and can destroy tooth enamel if used long-term.

How did I get started?

Not to be deterred, I decided to create my own teeth-whitening product. I went back to university and spent 18 months working with dentists and researching and testing various charcoals for their abrasive properties, quality, and safety.

I discovered one low-abrasive charcoal product derived from coconut shells that delivered excellent results. From this research and dedication, LoveSmiles was born. My criteria were to use only natural ingredients that wouldn’t have side effects that impacted my fragile health.

The whitening product also had to be used in conjunction with my medication. In the process, I found one low-abrasive, food-grade, and organic charcoal product derived from coconut shells that delivered excellent results.

I then began the arduous task of developing the LoveSmiles range, one of the very first dentist-approved vegan, non-toxic, peroxide-free DIY at-home biodegradable whitening kits.

What were my biggest challenges?

Next, I had to confirm my findings with dental professionals, scientific experts, and pharmaceutical lawyers. Then came the testing of the products for safety and efficacy. Not only was the product as effective as those whitening products using peroxide and other harsh chemicals, but its abrasive level was even lower than baking soda. In addition, the products had to be easy to use and be delivered in recyclable packaging that was safe for the environment.

Once I attained the testing results and certifications needed to validate the purity and effectiveness of my products, I enlisted the aid of an Australian manufacturer that I could count on to create and develop products that delivered on all of my high standards of criteria. It was time to launch LoveSmiles.
